poison plant

Drugs. The connotation for both negative mental and physical health concerns. Ever since we all could stand and listen we were taught the dangers of drugs. The destructive objects that hurt people who fall victim to them. And now our society has fallen victim itself to the debate of whether or not the drug known as marijuana should be readily available to the innocent population. The wolf in sheep's clothing is beginning to be looked at more closely and its important now to inform the people the ever present harm that this drug brings forth.
Good afternoon honorable judge, opponents, and fellow classmates. I am Daniel Ford and I stand here today with my partner Brayden Maidment who will help unveil the facts of Marijuana to discourage the resolution of the “Legalization of Marijuana” so that the true facts are properly presented. I will inform the class of both the short term harms of this drug as well as the long term impacts that can lead to serious injury or death. My partner will then go on to give examples of crimes committed while under the influence of  the drug cannabis as well as the negative and long lasting results of teenage usage that will seal the future of any naive child.
It is already well known that this drug is not healthy. While rumors are continuously spread by the stereotypical "drug addict" the majority of society understands and recognizes the harms that are associated with drug use. The most prevalent being the state of mind and body that comes quickly after the first dosage. Being high is an impaired state of mind. Comparable to the works of alcohol, however much more severe. According to Health Canada on the Facts of Marijuana it is proven that "Short-term use of cannabis can produce many...effects: Impaired motor skills, Hallucinations, Paranoia" as well as disorientation, all extremely dangerous to the general public and ones self. These effects over time can lead to psychosis or schizophrenia. The dangers are apparent however without proper understanding wrong choices could be made.
My second contention comes with a much harsher reality of the use of drugs. The long term effects can be devastating. The National Institute on drug abuse emphasizes "marijuana users have a 4.8-fold increase in the risk of heart attacks" because of harm the drug causes to the bodies most important organ. Along with the drug being the first steps in serious drug use that can hurt not only you but the people around you. Despite false claims that cannabis can help cure cancer "marijuana use has been linked in a few recent studies" explains The NIDA to an "aggressive type of testicular cancer in young men." This alone should bring health concerns to the general population.
The evidence concludes that the drug cannabis is not safe or healthy. Public safety will be unarguably at risk with the legalization of this drug. It is clear that the short term effects can be very dangerous to any user and the long term effects bring incurable harm. The resolution must fall. My partner and I now stand for cross examination.
